Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces the release of the new 1,200cc model Super Ténéré (XT1200Z) adopting the Yamaha Ténéré brand name long renowned in Europe. This model will be sold in the European and Australian markets beginning in May 2010.

The new Super Ténéré has been developed under the product concept of an “Ultimate Machine for Intercontinental Adventure.” It inherits the developmental ideals of the Ténéré that won a strong following in Europe in the ’80s and ’90s as the model that scored many victories in the Dakar Rally with its reputation as one of the world’s toughest endurance races. It achieves a high-level balance of the qualities riders desire in an intercontinental long-distance tourer, including good performance on unpaved roads and light and agile cornering performance.

The newly developed in-line 2-cylinder 1,200cc power unit features a side-mounted radiator that contributes to centralization of machine mass. It also adopts traction control based on technology fed back from Yamaha’s MotoGP racer development. What’s more, a number of technologies that support machine operation have been adopted: the YAMAHA D-MODE function that lets the rider choose between two performance modes, linear-control ABS that supports brake work for a smoother braking feeling, and a front-rear coordinated Unified Brake System.

The revolutionary Honda 3R-C concept will make its world debut in Geneva, alongside the EV-N concept which makes its European debut at the show.

1
Honda 3R-C Concept

Both the three-wheeled 3R-C concept, which envisions a single occupant vehicle for zero emission commuting, and the EV-N urban concept, draw on Honda’s vast working knowledge of vehicles utilizing electric motors.

3R-C
This revolutionary three wheeled battery electric vehicle concept shows what a future minimal urban transport vehicle for one person might look like. The battery electric drivetrain is mounted low in the three wheeled chassis, therefore keeping the centre of gravity low and thus improving stability.

The 3R-C has a clear canopy that covers the driver’s seat while it is parked and not in use. When 3R-C vehicle is in motion, the canopy becomes an enveloping wind-shield that provides the pilot, who sits low in the vehicle, with significant protection from the bodywork and doors.

The high sides of the safety shell seat give greater safety to the occupant, reducing the threat from side impacts and improving weather protection. In front of the driver is a lockable boot area, which gives significant secure storage for luggage or other items. The 3R-C’s designers created a flexible cover that surrounds the upper torso to reduce exposure to bad weather and improving comfort.

The 3R-C study was created by European designers working at Honda’s Research and Design facility in Milan.

Honda will begin sales in Thailand of a new Cub-type automatic transmission (AT) scooter model, Wave110i AT, in March of this year through A. P. Honda Co., Ltd., a Honda affiliate responsible for distribution of Honda motorcycle products in Thailand. Based on the Wave110i, which is highly acclaimed for its fuel efficiency, the Wave110i AT features a new automatic transmission called CV-Matic. The starting price will be 44,900 baht, with an annual sales plan of 50,000 units. (1 baht = approximately 2.7 yen)

Wave 110i AT

CV-Matic makes the Wave110i AT a product that offers both the typical characteristics of Cub-type bikes such as longer riding range, durability and superior cost-performance as well as added characteristics such as ease of operation and comfortable ride. In addition to Thailand, Honda has plans for the sequential introduction of Wave110i AT in Vietnam and neighboring countries to meet the diversifying needs of customers in ASEAN markets.

The CV-Matic features a new cooling system which solved the issue of heat load on drive belt, and was developed based on the small-motorcycle automatic transmission technologies Honda has been fostering over the years. This new system enhances the durability of the drive belt and allows for a more compact design with a shorter distance between the drive pulley and driven pulley. Due to this advance, the engine position does not need to be significantly altered, optimizing design layout freedom.

Industry-wide motorcycle sales in Thailand in 2009 totaled approximately 1.54 million units (down 10% compared to 2008). With sales of approximately 1.01 million units, more than 60% of the industry sales total, Honda has been the best-selling motorcycle brand in Thailand for 21 consecutive years. Due to the added comfort and ease-of-operation, the overall sales of AT models has been growing in Thailand, accounting for approximately 710,000 units, or approximately half of the market size in 2009.

With the introduction of the Wave110i AT, an AT model of the already popular Wave110i, Honda will further enhance its product lineup to meet the diversifying customer needs. Moreover, Honda is planning to install Honda’s programmed fuel injection system (PGM-FI) to all models sold in Thailand by the end of 2010.

Nissan today revealed for the first time its all-new small Crossover, Juke.

3
JUKE

Designed to offer a refreshing alternative for customers who are shopping in the small car segment of the market, but uninspired by the traditional offerings, Juke is a distinctive combination of SUV toughness and sporting style. Juke will inject some much needed masculinity and dynamism into the small car market.

The decision to introduce the industry’s fisrst small crossover into the small car market reflects Nissan’s philosophy of challenging conventions in Europe.

“In the last five years we have enjoyed significant growth in a crowded European market. This has been achieved by challenging traditional patterns and moving away from the C and D segments. Instead, we have pioneered the introduction of crossovers. We started with Murano and then, in higher volumes, with Qashqai – a car which has far exceeded our expectations. Sales have exceeded half-a-million in Europe in less than 3 years,” said Colin Dodge, Executive Vice President.

Juke will be manufactured in Europe at Nissan’s factory in Sunderland, England, and in Oppama, Japan. In Europe, its production alongside the Note compact family car and Qashqai crossover is the result of an investment in excess of 60m Euros, which safeguards over 1000 Nissan jobs, and more than 2000 in the supply chain.

Sales of Juke will begin in Japan in the summer, with the European and North American launch beginning in the autumn.

The 2010 Geneva International Motor Show will be the world debut of the European specification Honda CR-Z hybrid coupe. The European version features a 2+2 seating layout and an eight LED daytime running light accent under each of the headlamps.

2
CR-Z 2010

CR-Z customers will be able to enjoy the first car to combine a hybrid system with a 6-speed manual gearbox. By combining an efficient 1.5-liter petrol engine with Honda’s unique IMA parallel hybrid system, the CR-Z can offer lower emissions of all exhaust gasses, while offering an entertaining and engaging driving experience. The flexibility of the IMA parallel hybrid system means that it can be used with a manual gearbox, allowing drivers to exploit the broad spread of torque, while maintaining excellent fuel economy of just 5.0 l/100km.

To maximize driver choice and enhance the day to day drivability of the car, the CR-Z has been fitted with a 3-Mode Drive System. This unique feature allows the driver to choose between three driving modes, which alter the responses of the throttle, steering, idle stop timing, climate control and the level of assistance provided by the IMA system. In developing this new facility, Honda allows the driver to adapt the car’s settings to enjoy their favourite road, maximize economy, or strike a balance between the two.

Sport buttons have become commonplace usually offering a sharper throttle response, but Honda’s 3-Mode Drive System is different. The new system alters the behaviour of the hybrid drivetrain and the power steering assistance as well as the throttle mapping between the three modes.

When the CR-Z driver is away from the town or city and wanting to enjoy their drive more, they can put the car into SPORT mode. This sharpens the throttle response, changes the behaviour of the IMA hybrid system to provide more electric motor assistance, and increases the weight of the electric power steering.

Honda recognizes that even the most enthusiastic driver may regularly experience heavy traffic, where maximising fuel economy is more desirable than the perfect line through a corner. In these situations ECON mode can be selected, which prioritises fuel economy in the operation of the drive by wire throttle, ECU, air conditioning and the hybrid system. For those times when spirited driving is not possible or desirable, the Eco Assist function, in conjunction with the ECON mode, allows the driver to enjoy beating their best economy score on the way to work, or in heavy traffic.

At all other times the car can be run in NORM mode, which provides a balance between performance, economy and emissions and suits most driving situations.

The ambient lighting of the speedometer is used in the same way as in the Insight to guide the driver in driving more economically and ecologically. In addition to the Eco Assist function, the CR-Z’s meter lighting is linked to the 3-mode drive system. In NORM mode the speedometer is illuminated blue, with green illumination when the car is being driven in an economical manner. In ECON mode it is also blue (glowing green when driven economically) and it has a green eco flower lit alongside. When the speedometer is illuminated in a red ambient light, this indicates the CR-Z is in SPORT mode.

The CR-Z will go on sale across Europe in the middle of 2010 and prices will be announced at the Geneva motor show.

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced that its eco-drive support system, Eco-mode function and Navigation-linked speed control, employed in Nissan’s compact vehicles has won the ANRE (Agency for Natural Resources and Energy) Director-General’s award in the 20th annual Energy Conservation Prize.

The award is open to the public, and covers a wide range of energy conservation innovations, including use of new energy- and resource-saving or high energy-efficient materials, equipment and systems for non-military use. It recognizes innovative ideas to help accelerate wider commercial application of new energy conservation technologies.

Nissan’s eco-drive support system, Eco-mode function and Navigation-linked speed control, is a practical system which enables eco-drive at a relatively low cost and is recognized as a system which is expected to contribute to considerable energy conservation by employing it in a wider range of vehicles in the future.

When a vehicle is starting, cruising and decelerating before going into a curve, this system where the engine, CVT and the navigation system are cooperated can enhance in-use fuel efficiency*1 without any special driving skills. The system has already been adopted in Nissan vehicles starting by Tiida and Tiida Latio released in May 2009, as well as Cube released in November 2009.

Each of the following technologies are employed in this system;

<Smooth Acceleration Assist>
Assists soft acceleration which eco-drivers do with engine control.

<Smart-rev Control>
At the time of slow acceleration, identify flapping acceleration and maintain engine revolution constant to avoid uneven speed change and unnecessary fuel consumption.

<Eco-mode Function>*2
Enhanced version of Smooth Acceleration Assist. A mode can be changed by a flip of a switch.

<Navigation-linked Speed Control>*2
The engine brake is optimized to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption by providng route-information via the on-board navigation system including information on the next curve and the distance to the next tollgate, in addition to information from the vehicle.

1
Eco-mode function displays (image) (left) and the outline of Navigation-linked speed control (right)

Nissan received this award for third consecutive year, followed by its eco-driving service available on CARWINGS navigation system in 2008 and the X-TRAIL 20GT featuring clean diesel engine in 2009.

Nissan has been addressing a wide range of actions under “Blue Citizenship,” which represents the Company’s desire to protect the blue planet and to be a corporate citizen that can live symbiotically with people and society. These efforts range from such global issues as the environmental protection to contribution to communities, promoting diversity and making personal mobility available to as many people as possible. Nissan continues promoting its comprehensive environmental action plan, Nissan Green Program 2010, based on the “Blue Citizenship” spirit by introducing effective technologies, products and services into the market.

  1. In-use fuel efficiency-enhancing effects differs depending on each one’s driving environment and technique.
  2. Only for vehicles equipped with the HDD CARWINGS navigation system.
